Continuing Education Requirements for the State of Iowa
General Requirements
State Requirements
Resident Insurance Producers must satisfy the following continuing education requirements in order to renew their license: 36 hours every 3 years (Ethics – 3 hours).
Crop Insurance Producers are required to take 18 hours of CE, including 3 hours of ethics, every 3 years.

Multiple Lines Licensed Agents
Multiple Lines License Agents may take Major Lines courses in any license type held.
CE Exemptions
An attorney licensed to sell insurance. They must file a report showing proof of compliance with the CE requirement in their home state and pay the required renewal fees, Attorneys who do not have a CE requirement in their home states must comply with the Iowa insurance CE requirements, Producers on active duty with the U.S. Armed Forces, Producers licensed for creditor surety. Producers must still file renewals and pay the appropriate renewal fees
Course Requirements
Subject Area Requirements
Students may take an approved course in any line of authority.
Repeated Course Rules
Courses cannot be repeated within 2 years from the original course completion date.
Carryover Credits
No excess carry credits allowed.
Special Training Requirements
Initial Training: A one-time 4-hour Insurance Approved training course is required for agents to be eligible to sell Annuities.
Initial Training: 8 hours must be taken in general Long-Term Care.
Ongoing Training: 4 Hours every three years.
Initial Training: A one-time 3-hour FEMA/National Flood Insurance Program approved training course is required for agents selling Flood Insurance.
Anti-Money Laundering
All Iowa producers who sell indexed life products are required to complete a one-time 4-hour training course.
Final Exam Requirements
Exam Rules
Online Final Exams are closed book (course materials are not available while the Final Exam is in progress). The final exam must be passed with a score of 70% or higher to receive CE credit. If the exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
Proctor Requirements
Online Self-Study Courses require a Final Exam which is closed-book and must be proctored by a disinterested third party. A disinterested third party must certify that the Licensee completed the exam without assistance and is someone who has no financial interest in the success or failure of the student’s ability to maintain their license. Monitor-Free Courses have interactive quizzes throughout the course and there is no Final Exam.
American Insurance College Course Access
Students at the American Insurance College have unlimited access to all CE and Pre-Licensing courses.
Course Completion
AIC Completion Reporting
The American Insurance College reports all Course completions immediately. Our technology allows us to start reporting your results most normally within five minutes of your course completion.
Certificates of Completion
Certificates of Completion are issued immediately upon the completion of your course.
Reporting Fees
There is a state filing fee of $1.00 per credit hour.
