Continuing Education Requirements for the State of Virginia
General Requirements
State Requirements
Resident Insurance Producers must satisfy the following continuing education requirements in order to renew their license: 16 hours of CE (3 hours of ethics required) for single license holders. 24 hours for two or more lines of insurance (3 hours of ethics required).

Multiple Lines Licensed Agents
Multiple Lines License Agents may take Major Lines courses in any license type held.
CE Exemptions
Limited Lines Life and Health, Limited Lines Property and Casualty, Limited Lines Credit, Temporary Life and Health, Temporary Life and Health (Debit Only), Temporary Property and Casualty, Motor Vehicle Rental Contract, Managing General Agent, Reinsurance Intermediary Broker, Reinsurance Intermediary Manager, Viatical Settlement Broker, Variable Life and Annuities, Surplus Lines Broker, Title Settlement Agent
Course Requirements

Licensees must take courses for license types held. 16 hours of CE (3 hours of ethics required) for single license holders. 24 hours for two or more lines of insurance (3 hours of ethics required).
Repeated Course Rules
Courses cannot be repeated within 2 years from the original course completion date.
Carryover Credits
Virginia allows excess ethics credits to be applied to cover other CE requirements in the current biennium. Any remaining credits will be carried forward into the next biennium and applied to either the ethics or other CE requirements.
Special Training Requirements
Initial Training: A one-time 4-hour Insurance Approved training course is required for agents to be eligible to sell Annuities in Virginia.
Initial Training: 8 hours must be taken with 6 hours in general Long-Term Care and 2 hours specific to Virginia Law.
Ongoing Training: 4 Hours every two years.
Initial Training: A one-time 3-hour FEMA/National Flood Insurance Program approved training course is required for agents selling Flood Insurance.

Final Exam Requirements
Exam Rules
Online Final Exams are closed book (course materials are not available while the Final Exam is in progress). The final exam must be passed with a score of 70% or higher to receive CE credit. If the exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
Proctor Requirements
Final Exams are closed-book and do not require a proctor.
American Insurance College Course Access
Students at the American Insurance College have unlimited access to all CE and Pre-Licensing courses.
Course Completion

The American Insurance College reports all Course completions immediatey. Our technology allows us to start reporting your results most normally within five minutes of your course completion.
Certificates of Completion
Certificates of Completion are issued immediately upon the completion of your course.
Reporting Fees
There is a state filing fee of $2.60 per credit hour.
